Sea of Tuscany - The Apuan Coast

The sea is welcoming and radiant like the spaces behind it, protected by the majestic marble cathedrals of the Apuan mountains.  If you arrive in Tuscany from the north, your first taste of the coast will be a special one. It is completely different from the nearby towns topping the steep cliffs and also different from what will follow. Here the landscape changes, the rock leaves space for a wide stretch of fine sand that slips into the sea.

Apuane

Cave di marmo sopra Colonnata

Living in this place is wonderful. You can alternate going for a swim with excursions into the hills and mountains where you can admire the extraordinary views while tasting fish soup and Lardo di Colonnata (a very special kind of bacon) with a glass of Candia or Vermentino.

And there's more. The breathtaking peaks of the Apuan mountains frame the evergreen landscape.
This coast, or rather, the villages and towns along it have a vital link with the land, the mountains, which is where they draw their origins and traditions, colours and flavours from. This mixture gives rise to an enchanting formula: the blue sea, the beach with welcoming bathing areas, the seafront with the pine wood immediately behind, and then climbing towards elegant towns like Massa and Carrara at the foot of the majestic marble mountains that guard them.
